Final Fantasy XIV's free trial allows players to experience the award-winning world of Eorzea. This includes the main story and Heavensward and Stormblood expansions. However, there are certain limitations on the gil you can spend in the game. The Market Board and housing plots are not available to free trial users. Luckily, there are plenty of other options!
- Food
FFXIV boasts one of the more generous free trial periods in the genre. It allows players to experience the award-winning base game, A Realm Reborn, as well as Heavensward and Stormblood without restrictions.
However, there are limits to the amount of gil you can spend in the free trial. This includes no access to the Market Board or housing. Here are some tips to help you manage your Gil reserves.
- Materia
Materia is a recurring Final Fantasy theme, and FFXIV has a lot of it. Players can meld Materia into integrated gear sockets to improve their equipment’s initial stat bonuses, and can even go beyond an item’s maximum slot count with Overmelding.
This is particularly important for Crafters and Gatherers, but all Jobs can make good use of it as well. Lastly, it’s an easy way to improve your experience in the few small Gil sinks the game has built into its core gameplay.
- Potions
In FFXIV you can buy dyes and stat enhancing food with gil. Likewise you can purchase gear for your jobs from vendors and ingredients for crafters.
You can also use gil to upgrade your beast tribe rank granting access to higher-tier mounts. These mounts are quite expensive though. Lastly, you can also use gil for teleportation tickets. These are useful for FATEs, deep dungeons and MSQ trials.
- Mounts
Players who've made it to end game in FFXIV will want to spend their Gil on glamour items, mounts and houses. Getting high ranks in the Realm Reborn and Heavensward Beast Tribe quests unlocks some cool but expensive mounts.
FFXIV has more small Gil sinks built into core gameplay than WoW does, though, such as housing plots and Company Seal rewards from the Challenge Log.
- Glamour
The glamour system in FFXIV allows players to change the appearance of their armor without changing the stats. It starts off fairly complex, but once you know the basics, it's easy to get fancy with your gear!
The housing and market board aren't available to free trial players. This limits their need for gil to melding, travel and repairing. That leaves gil for glamour!
- Music

Unfortunately, copyright infringement rules prevent players from sharing Bard performances online. That includes a few FFXIV-specific compositions (Answers, Dragonsong, and Revolutions) as well as songs from previous Final Fantasy games.
- Crafting
Most MMOs have small Gil sinks built into core gameplay like repairing gear and flying, and FFXIV is no different. Quests, dungeon and raid boss chests, player commendations, and the challenge log all give out small amounts of Gil.
Housing and the Market Board aren’t available for free trial players, but that still leaves plenty to do. Leveling your crafting classes is a great way to stock up reserves.
- Houses
While free trial players cannot access the housing or market board, they can still use gil to buy dyes, stat enhancing food, gear for their jobs from vendors and ingredients for crafters. They can also buy treasure maps for rare mounts, glamours and minions.
The game features a few standard MMORPG Gil sinks including company seal rewards and the Challenge Log, which offers small amounts of money on a weekly basis.
- Minions
The Minions in the film are impulsive, and while they do have mischievous streaks, they also possess a naivety and wide-eyed wonder that endears them to viewers. They also exhibit considerable engineering abilities, designing and building spaceships and other toys for Gru's adopted daughters.
Free Trial players have a 300k Gil cap and can't access the Market Board or buy houses. However, there are plenty of other ways to spend your Gil in FFXIV.
- Skill Tree
FFXIV has one of the most generous trial periods of any MMO. The free trial allows players to experience A Realm Reborn, Heavensward and the Stormblood expansion.
The game also rewards gil from finishing guildleves, dungeons, Duty Roulettes and Challenge Log entries. Materia and Potions are another great way to spend gil. These items permanently increase the stats of your weapons and armor after melding.
