Never worry about running out of storage
Xbox Series X|S consoles require new Optimized games to be installed either on the console’s internal SSD or on a certified Seagate or WD_Black Expansion Drive. These certified drives match the internal SSD’s performance, ensuring fast load times and smooth gameplay.
Since new games require the use of this limited storage, it’s a good idea to install non-Optimized titles on an external hard drive to save space. This is especially important as many modern games now exceed 100GB in size, quickly consuming your available storage. While you can store an Xbox Series X|S Optimized game on an external hard drive, you will need to transfer it back to the SSD to play it.
Although 16TB of storage on a high-quality Xbox external hard drive is typically sufficient, some users—especially those with large collections of backward-compatible games—could still find themselves running out of space. This new update offers a solution, allowing for even more storage flexibility.
