Introduction

Millions of followers worship Khatu Shyam Ji as their own God of Compassion, Courage and Speedy Assistance. People who believe in Shyam Baba are confident that by calling him with faith, they will be provided with wisdom, guidance, and help with their problems. The faith that Khatu Shyam Ji will help in times of trouble is confirmed through the story of Barbarik's sacrifice. Barbarik was a great warrior who gave his life for the sake of his people, and thereby became Khatu Shyam Ji, a representation of salvation for the world and a new era of peace. The story of Barbarik is told throughout the Mahabharata, and it is filled with lessons of devotion, justice, and humility.

Barbarik was the grandson of Bhima (one of the Pandavas), and it is said that he was a very powerful warrior. Ahilawati (his mother) taught him the values of love, bravery and justice. He grew up to become one of the most skilled warriors in existence. He was gifted three divine, powerful arrows that made him unbeatable.

Barbarik's Promise

Barbarik vowed to his mother before the great Mahabharata war began that he would always support the weaker army in every conflict. His strong sense of justice and fairness was reflected in his dedication and determination to help others in need. When he heard that there was going to be a great battle (the Kurukshetra War), he made it his mission to support whoever was losing.

Testing Barbarik - Meeting Lord Krishna in Disguise

As Barbarik made his journey to the battlefield, he crossed paths with Lord Krishna, who was pretending to be a humble brahmin to see what type of person Barbarik really was and what his true intent was when he got there.

The Brahmin asked Barbarik, "Which side do you intend to support?"

Barbarik quickly replied, "I will support the side that looks weaker."

Lord Krishna then put Barbarik's strength to the test. When Barbarik demonstrated the power of his divine arrows, Krishna immediately understood that this single warrior had the power to change the war's outcome—alone.

However, Krishna saw a serious problem: if Barbarik kept switching sides—always supporting the one losing at the moment—the war would never conclude.

When Krishna first appeared before Barbarik as part of his dakshina or blessing, and immediately accepted it, Krishna subsequently identified himself to Barbarik and made yet another shocking request: "I am asking for your head as dakshina. Barbarik decided then that he would give Krishna his head. The act of giving up one's own head, then, represents the ultimate form of devotion, humility, and courage that exists in the core teachings of Hinduism, thereby signifying an individual's ability to give everything they have to the Higher Power that created them.

Barbarik Watched the War

After Barbarik had performed his sacrifice, Lord Krishna placed Barbarik's head on a hill overlooking the battlefield of Kurukshetra. From that height, Barbarik's head was able to see the entire Mahabharata War. When the war came to an end, Krishna asked Barbarik:

“Who do you think was responsible for the victory?”

Barbarik replied with profound wisdom when he said: “I saw only you throughout this entire war, in all of your divine will.” He answered this way because he had a deep understanding of Dharma (Righteous Duty).

How Barbarik Became Khatu Shyam Ji

Krishna was so impressed by Barbarik's devotion that he said to him:

“In the future, Kaliyuga, you will become Shyam (One of my forms). Whoever remembers you with faith and devotion shall have their wishes fulfilled by me.”

So, Barbarik became Khatu Shyam Ji, the worshipped deity who removes all forms of suffering, gives strength, and supports the weak and humbled.

His sacred temple stands in Khatu, Rajasthan, where millions of devotees visit yearly to seek his divine blessings.
